There is always the misconception that you can only motivate your employees by offering them financial rewards. Financial rewards are not motivators. As an SME, you are working with a petty budget and there’s only a little you can do. Motivating your Employees can be easy and very effective. These some basic ways by which you can uplift their spirit without having to pay a fortune.
Applaud
You could motivate them by requiring other of your employees and you giving them a round of applause on a working day. This should be well planned and come to them as a surprise. It may seem a bit trivial but should never be under-rated as it can generate a lot of excitement and is a proof you are not just about using them like machines.
Days off
Offering your employees days off work is also a good way to motivate them. This gives them the opportunity to cool their head off work and ease the stress. It helps them realize you care about their health and not just about getting your work done.
Offering Assistance
If you could spare some time out of your busy schedule, you could offer to help them complete some of their assignments, it shows they are not on their own and would motivate them to even do more as they are aware you are working directly with them.
Sending them appreciation messages
Don’t just send them emails for meetings, uncompleted assignments etc. Send them emails to show you appreciate their contribution towards the organization thus far, basically anything to show you love them as being a part of the organization. You can tag other team members along, this would help challenge them to be more productive too.
Remembering their special days
Sending those greeting messages on their birthdays, anniversaries can really come as a surprise to them and helps them build a personal connection with you outside work. They would feel more loyal to you.
Tag them along to those occasions
You are the boss, there are occasions whereby you get invited to special occasions and there may be an extra invitation. Don’t eat that buffet alone, you could take that high performing employee along.
