Samsung is working on its first all-metal handset
Samsung is rumoured to be working on a new all-metal handset, dubbed the SM-A500. The company has included metal frames on both the Samsung Galaxy Alpha and Samsung Galaxy Note 4 handsets in recent months, but these run around the edge of the devices, while the back panels are plastic.
A report has suggested the new Galaxy phone is going to be entirely clad in metal, unlike any previous Samsung device. Another report –– SamMobile, this time –– indicates Samsung is readying itself to bring the new handset to market but it has a few finishing touches to work on first. These include both hardware and software changes before the release. Read more after the cut...
The report suggests the handset will come with the same TouchWiz interface that was seen on the Galaxy Note 4. The rumours have also claimed newer versions of the SM-A500 prototype now come with a 13MP rear camera, while previous versions only had 8MP sensors.
Other rumoured specs include a 5in display with a 720 x 1280 pixel resolution, a 5MP front facing camera, expandable internal memory and a 2330 mAh battery.
It’s currently unclear whether there will be a Snapdragon 400 processor or a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor. Reports have differed all along, but with a processor in this category it's clear that this is not a flagship device, despite the metal and high-end imaging.
But this was the case with the Samsung Galaxy Alpha too; it didn’t pack the same level of specs and hardware as the Galaxy S5 but, as we noted in our Samsung Galaxy Alpha review, it somehow manages to out-do its larger, more powerful stable mate in almost everyway, proving once again that specs, while great, aren’t the only thing that are important when using a handset.
It's also not known whether the A500 will come to the UK - Samsung has a habit of launching its more experimental phones in its home country of Korea as a sort of testbed, before rolling out the new features globally in follow-up handsets. We have heard nothing on the subject of a name for the phone either, but it was previously suggested the Galaxy Alpha name may be the beginning of a new handset branch for Samsung, so it may be a riff on that.
It was recently revealed the Samsung Galaxy Edge handset would not be coming to the UK. TheSamsung Galaxy Note 4 DEFINITELY is and will be available from October 13 from various retailers. We went hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 at IFA 2014 and, as expected, it is something of a monster! Everything you'd want from a next-gen handset is there (by the bucket-load) and there's plenty of design changes (metal frames, for one) to get excited about. The Note 4 looks set to be a very BIG release for Samsung in Q4.
